High-Altitude Landscape Design & Low-Water Lawn Care

Landscaping in Colorado requires specialized techniques due to our high-altitude semi-arid climate. Colorado properties experience intense UV exposure, low relative humidity, rocky clay soils, and sudden temperature drops in early autumn and late spring. We design custom landscapes that thrive in these harsh conditions, using native plants and soil building strategies that lock in moisture and resist erosion.

Our turf management division specializes in drought-tolerant grasses suited for Colorado yards, including Turf-Type Tall Fescue (which develops deep root systems to access subsoil moisture), Kentucky Bluegrass (which enters dormancy during dry spells but recovers quickly with water), and native Buffalo grass for low-maintenance areas. We help you navigate local water guidelines and restrictions, designing watering schedules that keep your grass healthy while complying with local conservation laws.

Xeriscaping is one of our core specialties in Colorado. We build stunning, low-water landscapes using river rock beds, granite flagstone walkways, organic cedar mulching, and native perennials like Columbines, Blanketflowers, and Penstemons. These yards look beautiful year-round, require minimal maintenance, and drastically reduce your monthly water bill. Contact our Colorado team today to discuss a custom design.

Winterization Systems & Hardscaping in Colorado

Colorado’s freezing winter temperatures require mandatory winterization for all irrigation systems. In September and October, our local crews perform irrigation blowouts, using commercial air compressors to clear all water from your sprinkler lines, preventing pipes and backflow valves from cracking during hard winter freezes. We also perform spring startups to check for leaks and adjust nozzle patterns.

To add value and function to your mountain property, our Hardscaping division installs rugged paver patios, natural stone retaining walls, fire pits, and stone steps that handle heavy snow load and freeze-thaw cycles without shifting. We pair these stone structures with native pine and shrub plantings from our Landscape Design division.

To showcase your property against the mountain backdrop, we install custom low-voltage LED Outdoor Lighting, adding warmth and safety. Our Tree & Shrub Care team provides deep-root feeding and pruning to protect your evergreens and aspens from winter weight and pests. Schedule an estimate online to meet a Colorado specialist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Colorado winters bring deep ground freezes. If water remains in your sprinkler lines, it will freeze, expand, and burst the plastic pipes or break your backflow preventer. A professional blowout clears all water out safely.
Xeriscaping is low-water landscaping. It does not mean “no grass” or just gravel. It focuses on using water-efficient native plants, mulch to retain moisture, and putting turf only in functional areas.
Late spring (May) or early autumn (September) are the best times to plant, avoiding extreme summer heat and hard winter frosts.
Colorado’s heavy clay soil should be amended with organic compost or aged manure to improve drainage and aeration. We recommend core aeration annually to prevent compaction.
Plants like Rocky Mountain Penstemon, Columbine (the state flower), Blanketflower (Gaillardia), and Yarrow are extremely hardy, drought-tolerant, and thrive in rocky alpine environments.
We recommend waiting until mid-to-late May (around Mother’s Day) when the risk of a hard freeze has passed. Starting too early can expose backflow preventers to freezing damage.
